Daily pic #26: Chain Bridge, Budapest
The Sz�chenyi
Chain Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the river Danube
between the western (Buda) and eastern (Pest) sides of Budapest.
Built in 1849, it was the first permanent bridge across the
Danube in the Hungarian capital and was regarded as one of the
modern world's engineering wonders.
I took this picture in April 2006, during the largest flood of the Danube in the last 100 years, when the water reached 8.6m above normal level. The streets next to the river were completely covered by water - if you look carefully you can see the trees sticking out of the water on the other side .
The guy in the yellow T-shirt on the left, flanked by the two pretty girls, is not your typical Hungarian - I simply hijacked a fashion photo shoot. I just wish I had my current equipment with me then - the quality of Canon 20D with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 today is appalling (a bad workman always blames his tools).
