Ponte Vecchio

Florence has a number of interesting medieval bridges over the Arno river, the most famous of them is the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) also known as the Golden bridge, due to the presence of goldsmith and jeweler's shops on the bridge.

The Ponte Santa Trinita (Holly Trinity Bridge), named for a nearby church, is the oldest elliptic arch bridge in the world.

The Ponte alla Carraia (Chariots Bridge), originally dedicated to carriage transit, has changed its shape many times in the past centuries. The current bridge, rebuilt in 1952, after being destroyed by the Nazis in 1944, was criticized by the Florentines for its unsightly "humpback" shape. The disappointment of the people about it was so deep that the city council decided to reopen the bridge without any ceremony.
