Leo, the dog who came home

The JSPCA shelter was flooded during a downpour two weeks ago and the dogs from the flooded yards had to be evacuated. Many good people came and took home the dogs for the week that the shelter was uninhabitable.

Leo was one of those dogs. He has lived most of is life at the shelter. Born outside to a stray, he was picked up together with the other pups, when they were just a few weeks old. One by one, the pups were adopted, all - except for Leo, who became part of a pack at the shelter.

When the rain came Leo was sent to an apartment in Jerusalem. His foster family took good care of him, but Leo had a hard time getting used to living in a house with humans. A week after he left the shelter he had run away.

Five days after he escaped some volunteers were walking dogs outside the shelter. Suddenly a dog came up and joined the group. They all had to look twice - Leo had come home!

It took him five days to make the 15 kilometer trek and he looked a little thin, but he knew exactly where he was going. He walked right into the shelter and back to his yard and stretched out in his spot.

It is very sad that this dog is so used to shelter life, that a loving home was foreign and frightening. Hopefully someone will give him another chance...
